Over the course of time, Sony has been revamping certain old-world zones in EverQuest... either to fit in new expansion content, or simply to make them more similar to their EverQuest 2 counterparts. Freeport falls into the latter category -- in its original EQ form, it was a rather small, low-polycount city split into three separate districts, two under the control of the ruthless Freeport Militia, and the third held by the Knights of Truth. In EQ2, along with Norrath's "facelift", they transformed Freeport into a gigantic imperial capital under the sole dominion of Sir Lucan D'Lere and his Freeport Militia thugs.
However, many players who played both games noticed that the Freeport in EQ2 looked almost nothing like the original... so, during one of the expansions, Sony updated Freeport to look kinda like the old one, but also kinda like the new one. This new theme came with that update, too.
The only problem for me is: 99% of the time I play an MMO, I play with the music off for one reason or another. (In EQ, the reason is: the login theme is way too damn loud. Trust me -- play EQ and create two alts. You will understand every time you switch between them.) As a result, while I had heard Freeport's new theme thanks to Legends of Norrath, I simply had no idea that LoN was using the Freeport theme in its music playlist. It was only about two weeks ago that I visited Freeport with music on and went: "Whoa! I've heard this before!"
Good times, good times.
